Due to their different geological ages, each Hawaiian island has its own unique look, informed by millions of years of volcanic creation and erosion. Of the five major inhabited islands, Oʻahu is the second oldest of the main island chain. Its diamond shape separates it into north, south, east and west sides. With its safe harbors, expansive lagoons, soaring mountain ranges, and stunning beaches and surf made it one of the most desirable settlements in ancient times as well as today. For nearly 1,000 years Polynesians have inhabited this island and built a civilization that sustainably supported approximately 300,000 people at the time of its introduction to Westerners in 1779.
King Kamehameha conquered Oʻahu in 1795 in his attempt to unite the archipelago under one ruler. The battle between island tribes raged across the beaches and marshlands of Waikiki, culminating in a gruesome battle atop the 1,000-foot cliffs of the Nuʻuanu Pali where the Oʻahu warriors met their demise. Today, the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout is known as one of the most breathtaking panoramas in all Hawaiʻi.
- As far as city borders go, Honolulu is the largest city in the world. This is because the state constitution proclaims that any island or islet not named to a county belongs to Honolulu. The Hawaiian archipelago stretches all the way to Midway Atoll in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands, making the borders of Honolulu some 1,500 miles long!
- Honolulu is the nation’s 11th largest metropolitan area.
- More than 100 world-renowned beaches ring Oʻahu.
- Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States.
- The Dole Pineapple Plantation once produced nearly 75% of the world’s canned pineapples.
- The world’s largest wind generator is on Oʻahu. Its two blades are 400 feet long and the windmill’s tower stands twenty stories high!

- Lomi lomi salmon: A cold salad made from raw, diced salmon, tomatoes, and onions, seasoned with Hawaiian sea salt.
- Poke: Raw, marinated fish, usually ahi (tuna), served as an appetizer.
- Laulau: Pork, chicken, or fish wrapped in taro or ti leaves and steamed.
- Haupia: A coconut milk-based dessert with a consistency similar to gelatin.
- Fresh fruits: Locally-grown fruits like pineapple, papaya, and mango are often served.
Lu’aus often cover various aspects of Hawaiian culture and history, including:
- Ancient Hawaiian myths and legends: Storytelling is an integral part of a lu’au, often featuring tales of gods, goddesses, and heroes from Hawaiian mythology.
- Hula: Performances include both traditional and modern hula dances, accompanied by live music, chanting, and singing.
- Traditional instruments: Lu’aus showcase various Hawaiian musical instruments, such as the ukulele, slack-key guitar, and traditional percussion instruments like the ipu (gourd drum).
