HALEAKALĀ NATIONAL PARK AT SUNRISE, SUNSET & DURING THE DAY
Today over one million people visit the Haleakala National Park each year – and not just for sunrise. This expansive national park* not only encompasses a 7 mile long, 3 mile wide, nearly 2,600 ft deep crater, but spills down the slopes over the eastern crater rim through the Kipahulu Valley to the Pools of Oheo along the road to Hana.
*Designated protected natural land
There are extensive hiking trails in the crater and several cabins that can be rented although reservations are needed well in advance.
Visit the park on a sightseeing tour with a professional guide and driver. Go with a small group, large group or enjoy a private experience at sunrise, sunset, or doing the day.

Our driver was named Keaton and he did a wonderful job. The time of the tour was scheduled early in the morning which at first I wasn’t fond of but once we started the tour I was glad we did. When they put the tour together they took into consideration for each stop the time of day and how many people would be there at the time..every stop we made, we were ahead of the crowds! Fist stop was Pearl Harbor Memorial which was phenomenal! Then we were taken to the USS Arizona which was inspiring and sentimental. When we left there we started our Circle Island tour by stopping at the Dole Plantation Macadamia Nut Plantation ate lunch at a food truck court the Nuuanu Pali Lookout and then to the government buildings. It was a great tour and awesome experience!

Haleakalā National Park Introduction
The summit views at the Visitor Center are breathtaking at any time of day, weather permitting. At an elevation of 10,000 ft. the weather can change quickly, bringing high winds, rain, bone-chilling cold, and even snow! The road leading to the summit is a winding switchback that ascends from sea level to 10,000 ft elevation in just 38 miles – the largest elevation change in the shortest distance on earth!
The park contains many endangered species not found anywhere else on the planet. They evolved in isolation for hundreds of thousands of years before the first Polynesians arrived around 1,000 years ago.
Kipahulu – Pools Of Oheo – Seven Sacred Pools
There is nothing like the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park. The famed Pools of Oheo (sometimes referred to as the Seven Sacred Pools) is a wonderful and safe spot for swimming along the road to Hana. The pools are located just past Hana at the end of the paved road. Make sure you plan your drive so you can get to the pools for ample swim time!
There are several ways to experience Haleakala National Park. If you’d like to see the sunrise you will need to make a reservation with the Park Service. Otherwise, you can visit it on a first-come-first-serve basis. There is normally plenty of parking during the rest of the day although sunset is getting busier. Kipahulu, the Pools at Oheo, accessible by traveling on the road to Hana, is also part of Haleakala National Park.
World War 2
During WWII, Maui was home to two crucial training bases. One was a Naval Air Station at Puʻunene in Central Maui and the other was the 4th Marine Division in Haiku. The Marines trained in Haleakala Crater.
Haleakala’s Ecological Diversity
The 38 mile long road to Haleakala’s summit covers the same ecological zones you would encounter driving from Mexico to Canada.
Native Mammals In Haleakalā National Park
The only endemic mammals found in Haleakala National Park are the Hawaiian Hoary Bat and Hawaiian Monk Seal. All other mammals were introduced and have been highly destructive.
Endangered Species
There are more endangered species in Haleakala National Park than in any other United States national park.
Native Hawaiian Flora
All of the 1000+ native flowering plants in Hawai’i are endemic, meaning they are only found in Hawai’i.
What Are The Park’s Hours Of Operation?

What Should I Bring With Me When Visiting Haleakalā National Park?

Additionally, a camera or binoculars may be useful for taking photos and observing wildlife.
